I was playing around with an Am chord and got the drift of a riff going and added it to an older song that already had verses from long ago and embellished them with more lyrics to get this to where I wanted it. I've tended to envision this as a stage play with the actors silent, acting out the love and the drama of love and infatuation. I told a friend of mine, Dave Fiely, who's a slackkey player that I felt the song needed a musical lift to give it a bit more heft. Dave suggested I insert a major chord somewhere, I did that at the "When darkness rules the day" lyric and it felt good. Thanks Slack!

The Dancers
© Rick Landers 1979 – 2020

(Am)They danced in the hallway
They (C) danced for the queen
They (G) danced for the fools
Then they (Am) danced for you and me

They loved my the hour
And (C) when the sun did set
They (G) loved one another
Like no (Am) lovers ever did

(G) Love, let her (Am) go
(G) Love, tell her (Am) no

(Dm) She can’t go home
She can’t go home, any (Am) more (2x)

(Am) The Jester slips in sideways
(C) Now in center stage
And he (G) makes his lover laugh
Then he (Am) seals her in a cage

(G) No love lost between them
A spider’s web in (Am) play
(G) Love leaves, no reason
When darkness rules the (E) day

(Am – repeats)

(Dm) She can’t go home
She can’t go home, any (Am) more (2x)

(G) Love, let her (Am) go
(G) Love, let her (Am) go
(G) Love, tell her (Am) no
