I wrote this song quickly one morning (11/12/2021) on a guitar I received the night before, a 1950 Gibson CF-100 that was owned by a single legendary musical family since 1949...It belonged to legendary fiddle player Emmett W. Lundy's granddaughter, Joy, who passed away at 75 in 2010, and her son and daughter gifted me with the guitar and I was inspired to put her in tune and write a song.....a little more on this song's lyrics; There are alternative words so this song can be sung by anyone....and so the words about "belly tight" can mean the woman is pregnant or a male singer is stressed. And, the lyric about "dress" can be exchanged with "I confess".....I didn't want my first song on Joy's guitar to be a song that she couldn't sing herself from a woman's perspective...."That fence" is a metaphor for marriage and being "fenced in." Not a bad thing, necessarily. Oh, and the person singing the song is not being cheated on....their loved one is actually at work, working overtime to buy the couple a color tv....(smile) Rick - I capo this on the 4th fret.

Working Overtime
Music and Lyrics by Rick Landers (c) 2021
Rick Landers (vocal/guitar); Ron Goad (percussion/backup vocal); Jim Nagle (dobro); John Werntz (bass)

(G) You say you won't be home soon
You (C) say you'll be at (D) work, you're working (G) overtime (C-D)
Well, I (G) know there's a grain of truth in that
but ( C) you'll be with that good, very best (G) friend of mine (C-D)

(Am) I can't say it makes no sense
I watch you walking on that fence
the (G) one I bought
And (Am) every lie it's in plain site
I ignore them all with all my might
Do you (G) think that's fair?

(Em) I'm holding (C) on
(G) I'm standing on cold (D) ground
(Em) I'm holding (C) on
Where (G) love once was, was (D) found
(Em) I'm holding (C) on
(Em) I'm holding (C) on

(Instrumental Break)

(G) I'm laid out on our old blue couch
(C) watching our cheap (D) outdated (G) black and white (C-D)
It's (G) flickering news and selling stuff
we (C) can't afford, thinking someday we just might (C-D)

Still (Am) when I see you in that dress (I confess)
My heart starts making perfect sense
This (G) love affair
I (Am) call your name in the night
My heart is full my belly tight
Are (G) you still there?

(Em) I'm holding (C) on
(G) I'm standing on cold (D) ground
(Em) I'm holding on
Where (G) love once was, was (D) found
(Em) I'm holding (C) on
(Em) I'm holding (C) on

(G) Well, I can't say it makes no sense
I (C) watch you walking (D) on that fence
the (G) one I bought (C-D)
Every (G) lie it's in plain site
I (C) ignore them all, all (D) through the night
Do you (G) think that's fair? (C-D)
Do you (G) think that's fair? C-D)
Are (G) you still there? (C-D)
(G-C-D)
Are (G) you still there? (C-D) (Quietly)
G-D-C...fade to final strum while singing early morning hours.
It's one (o'clock)
It's two (o'clock)
It's three (o'clock)
