This song pays tribute to English singer-songwriter, Nick Drake, and his music. Nick passed away in 1974 and his talent gained world-wide attention decades later when his song, "Pink Moon" was used for the music of a Volkswagen commercial. Nick suffered from depression, and wrote remarkably complex, yet simple sounding songs. He is considered one of the best British folk artists of his time, and beyond.

Lyrics

"Open Up (A Song for Nick Drake)"
by Rick Landers (c) 2018

I smoke my last cigarette
It's not quite burned out yet
You turn your smile
into a frown
You're not quite ready for the clown

Open up, open up right now
Open up, open up right now
Open up, open up right now

No time to celebrate
We start too soon
And end too late
I see your hair come falling down
In our world of lost and found

Open up, open up right now
Open up, open up right now
Open up, open up right now

Hey there, you're on your way
I can see you running, so far from me
Hey there, you'd love to stay
But, your black eyed dog steals you away

I've given the best of me
But, you're too blind to see
that my heart is empty and bleeding

(Instrumental break)

Round and round we go
And where we stop
No one can tell
I see no end in sight
We're caught between darkness and light

Open up, open up right now
Open up, open up right now
Open up, open up right now

I smoked my last cigarette
It's not quite burned out yet
You turn your smile into a frown
You're not quite ready for this clown
